Three years after their debut album “Mostri” (Toast Records/CNI), “Doppelganger” is released on April 12. This is the second work by the half English half Italian band (three of them are from the West midlands, Worcester) published by extant Giulio Tedeschi’s Toast records from Turin.

Doppelganger is an 8 track album in which the band singles out all the issues emerging from Our “double” nature . We all need to face our own demons and alter-egos. Eventually what emerges is a Dorian Gray who is at the same time victim and executioner of all the weird mechanisms of society.
The Doppelganger has always been an essential psychoanalytical argument for discussion, giving way to many debates over the years, and LEF have made it the main theme of their concept album.
The idea stems out from the reflection of how bewildered you feel when you have to deal with ( as William Burroughs once defined it) all the “establishment garbage” which affects people forcing them to be an unauthentic self thus creating repressed monsters. The doppelganger ends up being a possible escape route, the manifestation of all your repressed feelings which is not to be underestimated and with which you need to come to terms with and accept if you are to live a more authentic life. The whole idea is reinforced and accompanied by a contemporary new wave sound with dark nuances which recall, at times bands such as Joy Division, The Sound, Interpol, Editors (with whom the band shares its upbringing and midlands origin) .
“One of the inspiring points of the whole album is as Lacan would put it “I am where I think not and I think where I am not”, that is to say our real self expresses itself more freely and more authentically when it unleashes from imposed distorted thinking” – says one of the band members guitarist Don Guarino – “ The whole idea is focused on the invitation to try and come to terms with one’s own darker sides, your own demons without any fear. The struggle for emancipation must , therefore, begin within your inner self and only when youl have got rid of all the superstructures that end up making the life of each human being a sort of prison, you might have the chance of achieving, even if only in a fragment, your own freedom”. The“Doppelganger” which originates from psychoanalysis and which was turned into an essay by Otto Rank in 1925 influenced and inspired several movements in the arts such as German expressionist movies like “The cabinet of Dr Caligari” and “Metropolis”). “This is the reason why our live performances will be accompanied by shots of black and white expressionist flicks and we have decided to dress up as Cesare, from Robert Wiene’s 1921 above mentioned masterpiece. Perhaps it is time to come out of that “Cabinet” .
